GlucoScreen

IMWUT 2023A readerless glucose test strip read by any smartphone touchscreen.

Early detection of prediabetes can forestall or reverse more serious illness, but current screening requires visits to a healthcare facility or a dedicated glucometer, both of which are costly or inaccessible for many populations.

GlucoScreen is a readerless glucose test strip that enables affordable, single-use, at-home glucose testing, using the phone's capacitive touchscreen to read and display results. By adding minimal, low-cost, battery-free electronics to commercially available test strips, it works with any smartphone and removes the need for a separate reader.

In an in vitro evaluation across five phones, GlucoScreen's mean absolute error was 4.52 mg/dl (Accu-Chek strips) and 3.7 mg/dl (True Metrix strips), compared to 4.98 and 5.44 mg/dl for the corresponding glucometers. In a clinical study with 75 patients, GlucoScreen's error was 10.47 mg/dl versus 9.88 mg/dl for the Accu-Chek glucometer, comparable to commercial devices.
